Boris Johnson would lose his seat if an election is called now, polls show

The latest polls show that after the party fallout, if a general election were held now, Prime Minister Boris Johnson would lose his seat. According to YouGov, Tories are facing the prospect of large-scale casualties at Con-Lab battlefields in England and Wales.

Of 88 battleground seats the Tories won from Labor in 2019 or hold a narrow majority, they would retain just three: Ashfield, Bassetlaw and Dudley North. Among the seats the Tories would lose are Uxbridge and South Ruislip – Mr Johnson’s constituency – where a current result would see Labout take five points.

James Johnson, a former Downing Street pollster during Theresa May’s tenure, said the results could turn out to be even worse than the model predicted. Remember, MRP does not capture tactical voting or local siege effects,” he said on Twitter. “Tactical voting is helping Labor and Liberal Democrats right now, so it’s highly likely that the current situation for the Tories will be even worse than this poll indicates.”

Discontent in Tory ranks is growing as MPs begin to fear losing their seats to fallout from Downing Street lockdown parties, a former Cabinet minister has said. Boris Johnson critic David Davis said his colleagues are “watching their own seats disappear” as Tory popularity continues to languish in the wake of the so-called partygate saga.

Mr Davis, a former Brexit secretary, told BBC Radio 4’s Today program that the Tories’ potential losses and the ‘distraction’ of questions over the No 10 parties were focusing people’s minds in terms of thinking about the direction party.

He implored Mr Johnson to step down in January, telling him ‘in the name of God, go’, and said he had not ‘changed his mind on this’. Asked if discontent was spreading within the Tory party, Mr Davis said: ‘There is no doubt about that, for two reasons.

“First, frankly, they see their own seats disappearing in many cases, they see themselves losing the next election because of it. Also, it has a bad effect on the country… it’s a distraction for everything you do and it doesn’t help the reputation of the country.
